LG 42LD520 42-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV

LG 42LD520 42-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV On Sale.

I spent close to an hour in the store comparing LCD TVs. This LG stood out with its sharp and bright colors. I used the store’s Internet connection to check out the reviews but since it is a new model there wasn’t many. The older model however was popular among gamers.

The speakers on this TV are hidden on the back and this gives it a neat look. The speakers also sound great. There are different sound options in the menu plus advanced picture controls. In “Intelligent Sensor” mode the TV adjust the brightness and color contrast according to the room lighting conditions. The picture quality is easy to setup using the picture wizard option.

This TV has three HDMI connections in the back to use with your laptop or desktop plus an RGB (VGA Cable). There is also a USB 2.0 port in the back. I connected a USB thumb drive and was able to listen to music and display my digital pictures on the screen.

Over all I am very pleased with quality of this LG model and recommend it to anyone who wants to buy a LCD TV for under k, and I mean not for picture quality but the size of the screen since this had as good, if not better, picture quality as other more expensive models in the store.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Awesome TV – Geoffrey From – Kansas City, MO USA
Overall this is a great tv. I own a LG blu-ray player as well and when mated with this tv it looks amazing. The 120hz Trumotion is really fun to watch sports on and can’t wait till football season. Thanks LG for another great product!!

I would not buy an LG TV – CM – Houston
I would not buy an LG LCD TV. I have own 3 of them, two 42″ and one 32″ and all of them went on the blink within 2 years or less. The first 42″ would not power on at all and needed a new main board at a cost of 0. The second 42″ would produce sound but no picture (screen black) and the third, the 32″, would power on and off by itself when changing channels. The last two are now at the recycler as the cost to repair was over half of a new one. I replaced them with Sony’s and the picture quality is far better, so far with no issues.

Excellent – G. Abella – United States
Go to any store where all TVs are connected to the same signal and you can compare image quality on all brands. For me, nothing tops Toshiba in the price range. This TV is very good.

very satisfied – Rashid H – Leesburg, VA
I have owned this tv for about little over a month. So far, it hasn’t given me any trouble. The white glove delivery went smoothly.

Quick Shipping but POOR INSTALLATION! – J. Cost – Cincinnati, Ohio USA
I have always had a great experience with Amazon until this one – their large delivery service partner – EAGLE were terrible, not only were they an hour late of the time frame given to me, but they were very inexperienced with assembly and installation of the TV. On top of the slow and poor experience, once they assembled the tv, they dropped it on my glass coffee table, damaging both. Trust me, do not get the white glove delivery service. Just sign for it at the door and don’t let them in!

buying online – James W. Hoover –
I was very wary about buying online but wanted to say that the procedure through Amazon was flawless. I would do it again without a second thought!

Samsung PN42C430 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV (Black)

Samsung PN42C430 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV (Black) On Sale.

I bought this TV to replace a philips 32 inch LCD HDTV. I’m an avid gamer so playing games was going to be my primary usage for this TV while watching TV/Movies/Netflix/etc would be secondary. So far I really like this TV. The video quality really blew me away! Colors were so much more vibrant compared to my older LCD set. It has a nice shiny almost mirror finish on it while the remote has a more matte finish. I was a bit concerned about burn-in but this TV has various anti-burn functions built in and after several long sessions of gaming (most lasting over 5 hours) I have not noticed anything. The sound is not necessaily bad but could be better. It’s not that the TV has low sound but rather has flat sound, espicially the factory settings (most noticeable when gaming),where the sound doesnt quite have that “pop” you would expect. I found that after adjusting the sound settings, I got some pretty enjoyable sound but dont expect surround sound. Now this TV is not without its flaws either. The biggest flaw I would say is that when mounted to a wall, the buzzing/humming sound is more noticeable espicially when the sound is low. This is due to the technology of Plasma TV’s. Plasma TV’s always produce a very low buzzing/humming sound which is normal but when mounted it echoes a bit off the wall so it sounds a bit louder than normally but this can be remedied by using the stand/base rather than mounting it. Keep in mind that I’m a very observant person so I tend to notice things that other people don’t notice so it might not be too big of an issue for others. Overall, this is an excellent Tv which anyone can enjoy. Dont let some misconceptions about HDTV’s turn you off from buying this Tv espicially since its so affordable compared to similar TV’s. 1080 is nice but not a necessity; you will be shocked how great 720 looks. If you are a gamer, your Plasma screen will not burn in because you play your games (unless you leave your game paused and the static image is on screen for several hours or something). Also, for anyone buying a HDTV, please take into considerations the appropriate size/distance ratio as it will help you choose an appropriately sized HDTV which will enhance your viewing experience (Bigger is not necessarily better).

Wrong Screws – Mark Twain –
This tv comes with the wrong size screws to screw the base together and screw the base to the tv. How stupid is that? Maybe someone at Samsung will read this and figure out that they should include the correct screws. I can’t comment on the quality of the picture or anything else about the tv, because I can’t assemble it, because the screws are the wrong size. Seriously. Well, I’m off to the hardware store to try to find the right screws.

Buy it! – Deb Rawr – Tampa, FL
I bought this item about two months ago. This TV caught my eye because of the price. At the time, it was 4, with free shipping.

After much anticipation, the first unit arrived with multiple cracks in the screen. Disappointing, but a quick visit to Amazon.com to process my return and reorder the unit was painless. UPS picked up the defective unit the next day, and the new unit arrived the following day.

I found the assembly easy for one person, and all the parts fit. Now for the part I’d been waiting for: the plasma experience. When I ran the setup, the tuner picked up some broadcast HD channels. The picture is great on cable input, but you can see Ryan Seacrest’s blackheads on those HD channels! The sound is excellent; the bass is good on the movie setting, and the clear voice setting is perfect for viewing late at night when you don’t want to disturb sleepers in the house. My unit doesn’t seem to have the buzzing sound that some have experienced, so overall I’m very happy with the sound.

I was disappointed with the sound leveling feature, though, which is supposed to level the sound between channels. It seemed to lower the sound on all channels to a muddled level, and it didn’t do anything to lower the level of commercials. I find the picture is a little dark, but that can be adjusted with one button on the remote. There is some motion blur, but it happens so seldom that I didn’t even notice it until I’d had the unit for at least a month. But the remote drives me batty. You have to point it directly at the sensor on the lower, right-hand side of the unit for it to work, and there is often a lag time after you push the buttons. Minor, I know, but it can tick you off.

Overall, only minor complaints. And for the price, you can’t beat it with a stick!

Wrong Base? – Steve – SoCal
I’m rating this a 3 hoping readers will take a look. I’m going thru the same problem as a previous reviewer; the screws connecting base to TV don’t fit. After the same back and forth with Amazon, Samsung, J&J, and Samsung, it appears the base shipped with the TV was the wrong model. The correct model number according to Samsung is BN96-13016C. Mine came with a BN61-0643A. The model number is on the underside of the base. Samsung is sending me a new one, I’ll report later if this solves the problem.

Mine died…twice – R. Liddell – Seattle, WA USA
On a lot of message boards you will see people saying that approximately 2% of Panasonic plasmas built in the timeframe this one was manufactured have fatal flaws. Take a look for yourself, though. Ever seen a consumer product with so many people complaining about it dying on them? I bought mine in December of 2007 and certainly wasn’t disappointed with the picture or sound quality. Too bad Panasonic put some very defective pieces into their power board. Mine first died in September of 2009 but (luckily) was still under extended warranty under my AMEX card. An authorized Panasonic service company replaced the P-Board (0), and less than five months later the tv is once again dead — the 10 blinking lights of death. No way would I pay out of my own pocket to get it fixed again. What’s the over/under on it dying again in just a few months? I’ll never buy a Panasonic again…

After two years, mine just broke as well – Steven Lee – ny
Bought this in Feb 2008 and worked fabulously until last week. Other than the amount of heat it put out, I felt that this was close to a top of the line plasma.

I used all of cnet’s suggested settings depending on whether I was watching television (cable box attached via HDMI) or movies/playing games (60G PS3 attached via HDMI) and it performed well.

Last week the screen went red on startup, whether there were no inputs plugged in or not. With a signal from either the cable or PS3 the images were severly solarized red. I did my research, thought it might be one of the control panels or lvds cable (big difference in replacement price) and called panasonic. Since I’m off warranty and this is not a known problem, they directed me to authorized technicians.

So I called geek squad. Geek squad thought it might be the digital board, but of course over the phone it’s impossible to give an accurate diagnosis. Estimated repair costs would be 0 at least and two visits.

The main problem with this for me is that even with the diagnosis, it’s mostly a guess. Geek squad can swap out the board, but if that doesn’t do it, you’re paying for another part and another visit and (more importantly) more time I should be at work and not taking a day off to deal with this.

With that analysis, I went straight to best buy’s website. They have a recycling program to pick up your old television and recycle it responsibly. Bought myself a samsung un40b6000 and told myself the smaller carbon footprint is worth the less than optimal viewing at an angle.

good while it lasts – F. Celestina –
though one pixel did die on my set about a year ago the picture quality is amazing…while it lasts. i just had it turn off on me after almost two years and now i find that it won’t turn back on unless i spend 300 dollars to repair it.

10 Flashing Lights – Kurosh Nahavandi – MI USA
Was a superb TV for about 10 months, or yesterday, when all of a sudden the TV turned off – 10 light flashes and repeats — After searching, it’s not looking good. Fortunately it looks like I may still be under warranty – however, this seems to be a systemic problem, and it breaks my heart knowing I’ve vouched so highly for this set.

Hopefully I’m treated well with service and the problem is fixed in a short manner.
Oh well.

Philips 42PFL3704D/F7 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

Philips 42PFL3704D/F7 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV On Sale.

This television was a steal from Wal-Mart for 8. I was skeptical about buying this at first because I’ve seen so many HDTVs display standard definition horribly. However, we took the plunge, and after hooking it up, I can say I’m thoroughly impressed. SD looks fine, not blocky and pixelated like I see with most other HDTVs and that’s even with the wide setting applied so that the picture fills up the entire screen.

Also, Xbox 360 games and Blu Ray movies look absolutely gorgeous – it’s like being in a movie theater. We’ve had this TV for just over a week now, and it has transformed everything from gaming to watching movies. The colors and display are spot on! The TV speakers aren’t the greatest, but we run the sound through our home stereo system. My only gripe is that the audio output RCA jacks aren’t variable, but we just a use a universal remote to switch over to our stereo and adjust the volume that way.

IMO, this TV outperforms many other LCDs I’ve seen, Sony and LG included. We don’t need all the bells and whistles – just a great display and with this TV, that’s what we’ve got.

Philips customer service is also superb. Once we unpacked the TV and set it up, we realized the remote didn’t work. A new remote was sent immediately no questions asked, and it arrived within a week. This could’ve been a minor inconvenience, but we had another Philips remote that worked with it.

I highly recommend this TV – it is absolutely the most bang for the buck you’ll find anywhere!

Excellent value for the money – GS – Boston, MA
I bought this TV at COSTCO 2 months ago. It works great.
It has vivid colors and great picture. Would buy it again.
The only (minor) complaint is about the remote, which feels pretty cheap.
But we never use it…

A Good HDTV with Great Picture Quality for the Money – Family Guy – Austin
I got it from Walmart with 498 today. The quality of picture is clean, crisp, clear and wonderful design. Very easy to assemble and set up. Please remember to download software in USB thumb drive and upgrade before using.
Sound has good loud volume with average quality but not very crisp like Samsung but not buzzing too. Remote looks a bit cheap and I could not feel the remote buttons well, response varies at different angle and ranges.
At least, it is easily the best available large 1080p HDTV for the price (at least for now).

Very nice – Shala Kerrigan – Anchorage
This was the first television my husband and I bought new. In the past we always got them from upgrading friends. and neither of us had ever bought a new television.
It’s been wonderful. The picture is gorgeous, and re-watching a lot of favorite tv shows has been a joy with it. It was fairly easy for my husband to set up and he really loves playing his console games on it.
When we buy another tv, we will probably get the same brand.
As far as sound goes, the home theater system we have hasn’t been hooked up to it yet, and we’ve been perfectly happy with the sound quality.
The matte screen is non-reflective so we can watch it easily with the lights on in the living room while I’m working on projects.

Sharp Aquos LC42D72U 42-Inch 1080p LCD HTDV

Sharp Aquos LC42D72U 42-Inch 1080p LCD HTDV On Sale.

After doing a lot of research, budgeting and sweating for several months last year I picked up one of these from Amazon in October or so. The only part that sucked was waiting for it to arrive, though it only took a few weeks. Ever since then we have loved everything about it. The picture is great, the sound is surprisingly decent for a TV, and the piano black cabinet is pretty. I’m not an audio or videophile but I’m fairly discriminating, and pretty well educated on these things due to my line of work. I work with a lot of high end displays that I could never possibly afford, but ever since getting this Aquos I haven’t felt like I’ve been missing anything.

I calibrated the picture using a special DVD, twice, when it was brand new. I haven’t touched any of the settings since and everything looks fantastic. The viewing angles are wide enough so that it looks just as good from any of the places in our living room where you’d watch it. We use it mostly for HDTV (Verizon FiOS) but I also have a 1080i upscaling DVD player and all of our movies look so much better on this TV that it’s nearly like seeing them again for the first time. Video games from 1080p sources look fantastic too. The case doesn’t get as dusty as I thought it would, and the screen almost never picks up any dust at all. I can’t think of a single complaint I could personally make about this TV, although if I had a lot of devices to plug into it, the lack of more HDMI inputs would be a concern.

I noticed that six people tagged this with “120 hz refresh rate.” I don’t know where that came from because I am fairly sure this is a 60 HZ display.

Banding at low def – Allen – boston
First the Sharp Aquos lc4d72u is a great TV. I do not see the the triple football that my friends have on there samsung sets (with 120 refreash rate on). The picture is so bright it is like starring into a flashlight.
I actually turned my back light down from the ~90 % factory setting.

The only problem is banding at low def. I do see a band down the middle in certain scenes in low def (many people don’t notice it till I point it out). When I switch between the HD and Normal channel running the same program the band dissappears at HD.

Also I have an DVD player that upscales to HD and I have never seen a band.

I would by this TV again. I have had it ~4 months.

Great HDTV! – awesome-o –
Just received my product without any issues via Eagle. Took about a week and a half. I’ve been looking for a new HDTV for some time and considered Samsung, Sony and Sharp. Sharp seemed to be right balance between cost and performance. I was concerned with reviews that said that many Sharp models have banding issues. However it seems that some banding is detectable in certain modes and if you are really looking for it. I decided that unless it was detectable in normal viewing, I won’t worry about. I did check for any clouding or dead pixels and didn’t see any during initial inspection. I didn’t see any noticeable banding.

Like others have stated, the factory settings are terrible so play around with the menu a bit to get the image closer to what you are comfortable with. The initial settings tend to be too red for my taste. You can set each input individually, via the “AV Mode User” selection.

While I don’t have the best A/V setup, I am very pleased with even the standard digital video. DVD, even a non-upconverted one is a big improvement over my old CRT. As for sound, sure it’s not great but more than adequate for my needs and an improvement over the tinny sound of my old Sony. All in all, very pleased with this purchase. If you can get this on sale it’s well worth it.

Thanks Sharp and Amazon – Kelly Combs –

Samsung HP-S4253 42-Inch Plasma HDTV

Samsung HP-S4253 42-Inch Plasma HDTV On Sale.

I bought this TV on 10/31/2006. It’s been one year. I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever. I’ve noticed a few people’s comments about a blue pixel showing up on the screen..I have not had this problem.I did have my screen professionally wall-mounted.But, I don’t think the professional installation has had anything to do with long-term quality.I originally paid 99.00 for this TV from a big-box store. I can’t believe the price is around 0-9. There may be newer versions with supposedly better features, BUT, for the price, this TV is great! The reason I bought this TV was that 2 guys who worked in the store personally owned this unit. I figured they must know what they are doing. Some have commented about the buzzing noise when the volume is turned up–I keep the volume on zero and feed it through a stereo system so I have never had the humming/buzzing problem people are talking about. However, I have turned off my stereo and used the volume built into the TV and did notice a humming sound. If you are considering buying this TV but do not plan to hook it up to a home stereo of some sort..you might want to reconsider buying this unit. But, if you plan to use your stereo volume—then no problem. I guess the humming could be considered a drawback.
One interesting anecdote about this unit. It will definately induce envy from your friends and family. One of the selling points of this TV,to me, was it’s piano-black-finish edges. This gives it the look of the expensive Pioneer Elite TVs. I don’t personally like flat screen TVs with the greyish borders–they tend to look plastic and cheap. This TV looks expensive! It’s a show-stopper if you wall mount it like I have, very clean and neat looking.
Overall I want to state that I have no specific allegiance to Samsung. I am not a Samsung employee. I do not own Samsung stock. I used to think of Samsung as a low to mid quality Korean electronics maker. If you had told me 5 years ago I would be paying 99.00 for ANYTHING Samsung..I would have told you, you were crazy! Overall, I have been very satisfied. I would not hesitate to recommend this TV, especially for the price as it stands today.

Samsung HPS4253 42″ Plasma HDTV

Samsung HP-S4253 42-Inch Plasma HDTV Specifications

Offering an incredible feature set and exceptional quality for its price, Samsung’s fifth-generation 42-inch HP-S4253 plasma TV uses the company’s proprietary electronic chassis and the latest DNIe enhancement circuitry to deliver outstanding brightness, contrast, and image clarity. Use it for home theater and use it for your PC–it’s perfect for both. In addition to a standard-broadcast NTSC tuner, it also features an integrated ATSC tuner that can capture over-the-air digital broadcasts from local network affiliates (the set will still require a set-top tuner for receiving non-terrestrial HD broadcasts from channels like HBO or Discovery).

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. Thanks to the new 13-bit processing capability of DNIe, the HP-S4253 can produce over 549 billion colors (compared to the one billion colors that TVs with 10-bit processing can produce.

This set features a 1024 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, 175-degree viewing angle, brightness rating of 1300 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), and an amazing 10000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV’s ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

The anti-glare plasma panel offers several protective features to resist burn-in, including auto pixel shift, signal pattern processing, and white screen function. It’s rated for a 60,000-hour panel life (6 hours of usage a day for 27 years). Other features include:

  • Picture-in-picture (PIP) enables convenient simultaneous viewing of TV programs and video or PC sources.
  • Parental Control (V-Chip) helps parents monitor what their children watch on TV by establishing rating limits.
  • Auto volume leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.
  • Multi-lingual on-screen displays in English, Spanish or French.
  • Side A/V input

High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the sides of the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. It produces 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts total) and offers the following connection options:

  • Composite (RCA audio/video): 2 inputs (1 on the side)
  • S-Video: 2 inputs (1 on the side)
  • Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 2 inputs
  • HDMI: 2 inputs
  • PC: 1 D-Sub15 input
  • RF: 2 inputs
  • Digital audio: 1 coaxial and 1 optical

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV–all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats–standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into ÒfocusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Great until . . . – Michael S. Youngs – Cobleskill, NY United States
the blue “dots” appear. I’ve had this about a year-and-a-half and the entire left side of the screen becomes a blue smimmer of varying translucency after about 1-2 hours of use. This has started to spread to the middle and top of the screen and is ruining the experience of watching anything. Anyone have any advice? Samsung customer service said they never heard of this, but it seems that I’m not the only one with this problem (and no more warranty). YIKES!

Philips 42PF9966 42-Inch HD-Ready Flat Panel Plasma TV

Philips 42PF9966 42-Inch HD-Ready Flat Panel Plasma TV On Sale.

I couldn’t resist when Sears put this set on sale for ,099. Best Buy was selling it for ,699 at the same time. A week later, Sears had raised their price as well. In the store, it was hard to tell the effect from Ambilight. After I placed it in front of the white wall in my home, I had one response. WOW! The Ambilight feature changes the color that is projected behind the set to match what is on the screen. If you are watching a golf match, green light will be projected on the wall that will give depth to the image that you are watching. You have to see it to believe it.

I now own two Phillips plasma tvs. While I have never needed service, I have been able to update the firmware on my units by downloading it from their website and transferring it to a usb jump drive. Very easy to do. You can also put your photos on a jump drive and insert it in the usb slot on the side of the tv to display them. Picture quality is outstanding.

The only thing that kept me from giving this set five stars was the absence of cable card support. The non-ambilight version that I own does have a cable card slot. You have to bite the bullet and rent the hd set top box.

Philips 42PF9966 42-Inch HD-Ready Flat Panel Plasma TV Feature

  • 42-inch widescreen HD-ready plasma television with 15 watts per channel x 2 and built-in NTSC tuner; 43.5 x 30.6 x 3.9 inches (W x H x D)
  • Ambilight technology throws a soft glow on the wall behind the screen to enhance perceived brightness, contrast, and color accuracy
  • Pixel Plus processor enhances every single pixel displayed, giving you razor-sharp pixels with incredible detail and depth
  • Digital Crystal Clear technology and antireflective coating ensure high (3,000:1) contrast, high (1,000 cd/m3) brightness
  • Includes table stand; mounting brackets and a headphone output for private listening

Philips 42PF9966 42-Inch HD-Ready Flat Panel Plasma TV Overview

Whether in homes, factories, offices, airports, or on the street, it’s hard to imagine a place where Philips is absent. What Philips wants is to make your life and work easier – and more fun! And Philips continuously explores new ways to improve products and to offer innovative products to its consumers. Philips. “Let’s Make Things Better”.

Philips 42PF9966 42-Inch HD-Ready Flat Panel Plasma TV Specifications

Philips’ 42PF9966 plasma television offers a high-performance, widescreen (16:9) image from a casing less than 4 inches deep. The 50-inch set offers astronomical brightness and contrast settings (1,000 cd/m3 and 3,000:1, respectively), as well as an integrated TV tuner for cable or broadcast reception of all your favorite programs. Hook it up to an optional DTV receiver or progressive-scan DVD player and you’ll enjoy vivid, detailed images from 1080i, 720p, and 480p sources, which render at up to 720p resolution on the set’s native 1,366 x 768-pixel screen.

Philips’ unique Ambilight feature throws a soft glow on the wall behind the set to relax your eyes and heighten your perception of image detail, brightness, contrast, and colors. Ambilight settings include 6 presets and a user-adjustable setting. Philips invented Digital Natural Motion to eliminate the “juddering” effects visible in moving video images. Digital Natural Motion estimates motion and corrects “juddering” in both broadcast and DVD-based movie material, smoothing and sharpening the images you see.

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you’ve never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor’s slim profile–the 42PF9966 is a mere 3.9 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (mounting brackets provided). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen).

This TV also uses the power of the Pixel Plus processor to enhance every single pixel displayed. The result is razor-sharp pixels with incredible detail and depth. A feature called Active Control Plus continually adjusts picture settings at over 60 times per second for all inputs, correcting both sharpness and noise reduction, even adjusting for changes in ambient viewing light.

The set pumps 15 watts per channel x 2 RMS, and onboard Dolby Virtual Surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any 2 speakers. FM tuning options include 40 convenient presets, RDS (Radio Data Service) for visual station and song identification, and auto/manual station setting. The unit’s .125-inch headphone jack affords private listening.

Audio/video inputs include a direct-digital HDMI input, 2 component-video (1 configured for RCA-type RGB+HV computer outputs, with separate horizontal and vertical sync terminals), 3 each S-video, and composite-video connections. A convenient side-panel input (including a headphone jack and an S-video jack) simplifies spontaneous hookups.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any AV source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio–all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

What’s in the Box
TV, stand, a universal remote control, remote batteries, and a user’s manual.

avoid the expense – et – Greencastle, IN USA
I paid 00+ for mine and 60 days out of the warranty it popped and had no sound or picture. (red light flashes 7 times) I searched the webb and learned this is a very common story for this TV. It cannot be reasonably repaired and very few places even service this model in Central Indiana. I enjoyed it while it worked.

Terrible Product – Captain Uncle – Downers Grove, IL United States
Bought this product as a refurbished item from the Phillips on-line store. Suddenly stopped working in the middle of game 5 of the NBA finals – first the picture went off, and then the sound. The green indicator light changed to a blinking red, and refused to even power off using either the remote button or the power button on the TV! Eventually had to unplug it to switch it off. Even though it’s “under warranty”, the only way to get any work done on it is to haul it to an authorized Phillip center, which is about 50 miles away. Checked on-line forums – apparently is a common, expensive problem with no easy solution. Had an independent, trusted TV repair man look at the problem – he immediately recommended scrapping the TV, and said it was a very common problem with Phillip TVs, and would cost at least 0 to fix. My strong recommendation is to never purchase a TV from Phillips!

Poor picture quality – Jerry –
I am amazed that the other reviewers laud the picture quality. I have a 6 year old RCA which I considered to be a poor tv (weighed over 200 pounds), but the screen on that shows no pixelation and more realistic color. There is NO comparison in picture quality and this one cost 0 more that that did. I was really shocked at how bad the picture is; it’s actually annoying. Plasma supposedly gets worse over time. I can’t wait.

When something moves onscreen you get a shadow, the TV takes a while to start, the screen jumps to adjust whenever you change channels, channel changing is slow. Really, this is the worst TV I have had since the 1960’s. If you do not HAVE to hang your TV on a wall, do not buy this TV. Frankly, there are ones with better pictures than this. But don’t buy a flat screen unless you need to. The quality is MUCH better on non flat models. At this point, cool technology loses out to plain decent functionality. My best TV is the RCA — sad to say.

Horrible quality- Do not buy a Phillips – malexa00 –
We purchased a Phillips 42″ plasma TV and it had constant problems. Now it is no longer working and cannot be fixed. WE had 2 different repair men look at the TV and they cannot get it to work. Never buy a Phillips. They have terrible quality and bad customer service.
